THEATRE ARTS CAMP

Led by teaching artists and anchored in the professional artistic work on our stages, our Theatre Arts Camp programs aim to provide young people with the opportunity for learning, play, joy and connection with fellow theatre-lovers in a supportive and nurturing learning environment.

No experience is necessary. All are welcome.

To ensure anyone who wants to participate can, Pay-What-You-Will (PWYW) and other financial assistance is available for all programs.


VIRTUAL YOUTH PROGRAMS

Virtual Musical Theatre Training Program - Grades 9-12

If "All the world's a stage," what better stage than the one right at home? Though we can't currently physically be in the spotlight, we will provide the tools you need for your next opportunity to be the artist you've always dreamed you could be! Through online group and one-on-one training with theatre professionals, we will make that a reality. 

Delivered in partnership with In the Wings and conducted entirely through Zoom and Cleanfeed, this two-week virtual musical theatre training program will support you in honing your craft and becoming more confident in auditions. We will focus on contrasting musical theatre styles in dance, voice and acting with the goal of preparing you for both live and self-taped auditions.

Dates:
Session 1: July 5-16, 2021

Each day runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. but each student will be online for a maximum of 3 hours each day within that time.  Please see this Sample Schedule for more details.

Participants will participate virtually and, as such, will require:

  • A computer or tablet able to run a recent version of a web browser such as Chrome, Safari or Firefox.
  • A reliable high-speed internet connection.
  • A webcam (internal or external), digital camera, or similar device, to stream video.
  • A microphone (internal or external) plus speakers or headphones.
  • Minimum floor space at home of approx. 8' x 8' in which to move.

COST: $650 + tax

Shakespeare Weekend Intensive - Grades 8-12

This three-day intensive program provides young people with the opportunity to actively explore the text, characters and themes of Shakespeare from an actor's perspective.

This program includes access to the library of Stratford Festival On Film Shakespeare productions on STRATFEST@HOME.

Dates:
July 9 - 11, 2021 (12:00-4:00 p.m.)

Cost: This program is Pay-What-You-Will (PWYW), with a suggested payment of $99 +tax.  If you are able to give more, please consider doing so in order to pay it forward.

Participants will participate virtually and, as such, will require:

Create and Connect - Ages 12-16

Please note that this program is offered at no cost to participants to promote inclusion for families and young people who may not be able to access arts and leadership programming otherwise.

Delivered in partnership with DAREarts, our new Create and Connect program invites participants ages 12-16 from the GTA, the City of Stratford and Perth County to explore the world of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night together as their own online theatre company, discovering many elements of theatre through hands-on arts experiences guided by professional teaching artists from both DAREarts and the Stratford Festival.

Topics explored will include: connecting Shakespeare to our lives today, the many layers of theatre that go beyond acting on stage (such as set design, costuming, writing, etc.) and how we can build connections to ourselves and each other along the way.

Dates:
Monday to Friday, July 19-30, 2021 (10:30 a.m.- noon)

The program is offered free-of-charge to all participants.

Young Writers Retreat - Grades 8-12

Led by professional playwright, Diane Flacks, this program invites young writers to develop creative playwriting techniques to express their original ideas. Working collaboratively and on their own, participants will experiment with different writing exercises, styles and genres in order to bring a script from page to stage.

Participants will also be paired with a mentor who is part of the Stratford Festival Playwrights Retreat, an annual retreat for professional playwrights offered through the Foerster Bernstein New Play Development Program at the Stratford Festival.

The program culminates in a virtual reading of participants' original work by members of the Stratford Festival acting company. 

Space is limited. To be considered to participate in the 2021 Young Writers Retreat, please complete the application form (see below) and email it to educate@stratfordfestival.ca by August 16, 2021.

October 5 to December 7, 2021 (Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 p.m.)
